The more bird walks I do at Oxley Creek Common, the more I understand why it’s so popular with birders. It’s so consistently full of amazing birds, and the walk is so pleasant.
On this trip, I found 48 species and 8 lifers.
Sam and I did the full walk, out to Pelican Island and the Secret Forest and back again. It’s a long walk for a Saturday morning, but we saw so many cool birds. I got photos of some of them.
Like every morning at Oxley Creek Common, first up we said hello to the Golden-Headed Cisticolas, who were screaming away as usual (except this one, but only because its mouth was full).
Next up was a quick, very-difficult-to-photograph White-Browed Scrubwren:
And then these striking Red-Browed Finches (Firetails), who followed us along the path for a little while.
We spotted this Dollarbird a way off in a tree, peering down at us. Sometimes it’s difficult to capture the colours in their feathers, so I’m happy to see the blues in this photo.
One of the most exciting birds of the morning was one we’ve been hoping to spot for a while: the Royal Spoonbill. Check out this handsome guy and his cool hairdo.
Also at Pelican Island were a pair of Grey Teals, another lifer for both Sam and me.
I never get sick of seeing beautiful Rainbow Bee-Eaters, too.
Last time I was at Oxley Creek Common, I was thrilled to see a Silvereye way off in the distance. This time we saw at least three, and much closer, which was exciting!
I also never get sick of photographing fairywrens. This Superb Fairywren family were in the perfect spot for a few nice photos.
I also love the spotty feathers of Double-Barred Finches. They’re such gorgeous birds.
And, last but not least, a common bird but one that I always think is fun to photograph—a Torresian Crow, settled up in the tallest tree at Oxley Creek Common.
And that’s it for another successful birding trip at Oxley Creek Common!
