A new birding spot! Sam and I visited Toohey Forest for a morning bird walk. We’ve driven through this spot so many times and I’ve always wanted to check it out, but had never got around to it. Thanks to birding, I’ve finally gotten there.
We didn’t find as many birds as we were hoping to, but I was still really impressed with how beautiful the forest was. We climbed up to the top of the ridge and found the most birds at the highest point of the track. There was a moment when we rounded a corner and found the most beautiful view of the other side of the mountain—and I totally forgot I was in a city.
The first exciting spot of the day were these Spangled Drongos—a lifer for me. Their fish tails are so striking.
We were lucky to spot some more Rainbow Bee-Eaters, too!
And then we found some Grey Shrikethrushes, a lifer for Sam. They have such a beautiful call. No good photos, but we spent a while following them around as they darted through the trees.
Next were some more beautiful Sacred Kingfishers, which we spotted going back and forth to their nest:
Big thanks to birding for helping me to get out of the house and visit places I’ve always wanted to go.
